BOOS, BRAVOS, AND TIDBITS

BRAVO to Mattie L. Moran, a registered nurse, who planned, found funding for, and directed the -construction of a $2.3 million housing complex for healthy elderly persons in Westlake, Ohio. The complex, consisting of six connecting 2-story buildings, is called "Our House" because it is designed to provide an atmosphere "as nearly like the home the elderly once enjoyed, without the burdens",

BRAVO to the friends of 4-year-old Christina Keeton of Chillicothe, who rescued her from a man who tried to assault her as she was walking near her home. Christina's sister, Kimberly, her friend Lisa and Lisa's brother Albert drove the man away by throwing rocks. Snoopy, Albert's dog, also helped in the rescue.

BRAVO to the national anti-pornography group, Women Against Violence Against Women, who succeeded in convincing ABC-TV to drop its plans to

dramatize the adventures of Oscar Kendall, Kendall posed as celebrity fashion photographer Richard Avedon and used his guise to attract women whom he then raped. Edwin Vane, national program director, said in a letter to WAVAW that as soon as APC learned Kendall had used his impersonation to rape a number of women, it dropped the project.

BOO to the Cleveland women's community for not providing What She Wants with more Boos, Bravos and Tidbits. Is everything really so dull out there?

BOO to the National Organization for Women, who invited Ted Kennedy to be their keynote speaker at the national conference held October 6-9 at the

Washington, D.C. Hilton. Kennedy was the co-sponsor and advocate of S.1487, the proposed new federal criminal code which would discriminate against abortion rights, gay activists, labor unions and civil and individual rights in general.

because of Peg Morse, who was a real plus for the Clinic. Peg was a social worker who came to volunteer. I was the only one doing counseling at the time. Peg wanted to know what I was doing, and when I told her, she thought it was dynamite. She showed me a training curriculum she had written and wanted to train women to do women's counseling. She sat in on sessions with me, and then just took over. We started training classes and had one or two new women's counselors on every night, Eventually we had enough counselors to do mostly individual counseling like they are doing now. It was great. That's when I dropped doing quite so much birth control and problem pregnancy counseling and was doing mostly the VD counseling and the group education.

I enjoyed doing the women's counseling, but the case load was overwhelming. By then, I had started seeing people with sexuality "problems". There was nobody doing sexuality counseling at that time. I went to the libraries to do some research, but they had nothing on the subject. Even at the medical school library, they only had a film on masturbation. At the same time, one of the doctors came to me and said he had a group of second-year medical students who wanted to be able to deal with sexuality problems, but had gotten a run-around at the medical school. They were sent from Ob-Gyn to the Urology Department, from there to the Psychiatry Department, and had gotten nowhere. He asked if I was willing to hold classes with these students in his home, which he could tape. So there I was teaching second-year medical students about sexuality problems based on my own counseling experience. As a result, something was done about it at the medical school. We've had some strange in-puts. Had we knocked on the medical school's door and said, "Hey, this is what you need,'' I'm sure it would have *een shut.

victims you were seeing at the Free Clinie? We were the only ones all the way down the line treating rape victims. I think it was about 1972 that I decided we really needed a rape crisis hotline. I didn't have the energy to do it single-handedly -I just had the idea. There were some other women interested, especially Lynn Hammond. Lynn had been volunteering as a women's counselor at the time. She came to me one night and offered to see all the rape victims for counseling. It was such a relief, since we were so overloaded with everything else. Lynn started counseling all the rape victims, and the Rape Crisis Hotline eventually started on the Free Clinic Hotline number.

In the final installment of this interview, Jeanne will discuss the drug abuse and mental health counseling she does at the Free Clinic.
